Mixing glazes
We talked about our favorite commercial glazes but who here also mixes some of their glazes? Where do you find your recipes for them? What’s your favorite that you mix? I love John Britt’s glaze book and I also use Glazy.org. Joe Thompson has really good glaze recipes on Glazy.. If you’re just starting out, his first five series is a good place to begin - five basic ingredients plus a colorant. And Glazy is free! I think my favorite that I mix is John’s Floating Blue 2 from John Britt’s book. Whenever I do a show, those are usually the first pieces to go. And if anyone requests a specific glaze, that’s usually it. Don’t get me wrong - I still buy a lot of glazes. But I also have a shelf of glazes I’ve mixed. So let me know. Do you mix any of your glazes? If not, why don’t you try? (That’s a question - why not?)

Hi Mary, I have made some glazes from a recipe from Mastering Cone 6 Glazes and tried Raspberry and Licorice, I’ve just bought Amazing Glaze Food-Safe Recipes which I haven’t explored yet. My very small studio is full of buckets of glazes that are perhaps not my favourite 🤣 So I have found buying Amaco, Mayco and Spectrum glazes so much easier with real success with nearly every piece good enough to sell 😊 Dipping glazes is a real art and skill to produce well with so many more test and a lot of time and space! But I definitely make my own white liner glaze to cut the cost down…

@Mary Carolyn hello Mary do you mean thicker with your dipping glazes? I should of started mixing my original glazes in small amounts and yes get smaller containers, that was my mistake 😭 But I should start using the glazes that I don’t like as liner glaze to use them up to clear some of my larger buckets to make more room! It’s such a shame Mary that you’re not my neighbour, as it’s always good to have a pottery friend close with all the problems that ceramics throw at all of us…
The Crow mug results
Thank you everyone for helping with I’m dilemma for my Crow mug and I think it’s a success. I have used white Engobe to give me more of a background and Mayco Birch inside, the Crows are manganese wash and Iron oxide for the grass design and you can see from the video the the manganese has quite a sparkle 😊

@Mary Lee Edwards thank you Mary Lee, it’s definitely my favourite mug at the moment 🤣 As you know what potters are like with a cupboard full of your own mugs!

@Hollysan Roques thank you, I wish I didn’t have to do my other job so I could keep on with so many other ideas I have with Crow creations 😊
✨ A Cup with a Fidget Surprise ✨
I want to share my newest cup with you — and I’m honestly so excited about this one. I integrated a small movable bead into the handle that spins like a little fidget toy. It’s subtle, playful, and incredibly satisfying to touch while holding the cup. 🌀☕ I first saw the idea on Instagram and immediately knew I had to try it. The funny thing is: no one explained how to actually make it. No process, no tutorial — just the finished piece. So I experimented. I tested. I adjusted. And eventually… I found my own way to make it work. 🙌 The moment it fired successfully and the bead moved freely was such a great feeling. That mix of relief and excitement when something new actually works is just the best. 🔥✨ And the best part? Using the cup feels just as good as making it did. Sometimes the most rewarding pieces are the ones where you have to figure things out yourself. 💛

NCECA 2026
I know the big party will be in 2027 when all our lovely fellow potters from abroad will be coming to Baltimore… I’m so looking forward to that!!! In the meantime, is anyone planning on going to NCECA this March in Detroit who would like to meet up with me?

Keeping Older Pots
Do you have any pots that you just never wanted to part with? These are two of mine. The lighter one is Iron Lustre over Spectrum Milk & Honey, and the darker one is Amaco Dark Green over River Rock. I didn't want to part with these.... but eventually, I did.

I love the River Rock bowl Gwen 😍 I always keep the ones that aren’t good enough to sell 🤣 As I think a sale will pay for another bill !! But enjoying them for a few weeks is always nice.
