Anyone upgrading their home lab network at the end of 2025?
Wondering how many are upgrading their home lab network with black friday/cyber monday and cyber week deals? Check out a quick overview post on things to consider upgrading: https://www.virtualizationhowto.com/2025/12/2025-home-lab-network-upgrades-every-home-lab-needs/

I switched completely to Unifi on black friday. In the past, a gateway from Ubiquiti was out of the question for me. Until now, I had relied on pfSense, but I already had switches and Wi-Fi antennas from Unifi. Now that my personal requirements for a router have changed, I see the synergies of the Unifi ecosystem as a major advantage. And ... I purchased the Cloud Gateway Max at a bargain price. It is scheduled to be delivered today. So, now everyone already knows what I'll be doing tonight. ๐Ÿ˜
Do You Trust a Single DNS Server in Your Home Lab?
I'm curious what everyone here is running DNS-wise in the home lab. Do you run multiple servers? I am a big advocate of doing so. Not only do you learn a lot of nifty name resolution tricks, but it is just more resilient: https://www.virtualizationhowto.com/2025/10/why-i-run-multiple-dns-servers-in-my-home-lab-and-you-should-too/

I run two piHole servers ... and am still looking for a simple solution to synchronize the configuration between the two. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.
Content blocking ๐Ÿšซ
I have a homelab issue I can't seem to solve. I have children and they are consuming content on YT โ–ถ๏ธ. For some content it's fine by us as parents but some content however..... I tried blocking ๐Ÿšซ content with PiHole and currently running AdGuard Home but both don't seem to do the trick. I have a PfSense firewall and a few VM's and LCX containers running. Is there a solution for this challenge we have as parents to ๐Ÿšซ content?

@Thomas Heiden Then ... do it! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Hereโ€™s what I did: I set up an extra WiFi SSID on my Unifi Access Points just for the kids, and put it on its own VLAN. That VLAN uses its own DNS server, which in this case is a piHole. In the DNS block list, I added โ€œ.*youtube\.comโ€ and โ€œ.*googlevideo\.comโ€ (regex deny). So, when I want to let the kids watch YouTube, I just turn off the block, and when itโ€™s time to stop, I turn it back on. I also searched for a long time, but honestly, I couldnโ€™t find any real way to filter YouTube content or block specific stuff on YouTube.

@Michael Berry As an alternative to GrayJay I can recommend MeTube: https://hub.docker.com/r/alexta69/metube (runs in Docker)
Kestra vs N8N Workflow
I been doing the research on these tools and wandering on the general opinion of the community which is best for homelabs on ease of installation and configurations. To put this in context, I want to use workflows using Python, Ansible, and Terraform along with Gitea and AI integration. I watch a lot of YouTube and read write-ups including Brandon reviews. Looking for general feedback on setup and daily use including issues (pros and cons).

Unfortunately, I can't comment on Kestra, but I've been using n8n for a while now. I used to do my workflows with make.com, and it was a very easy transition from make.com to n8n. The systems work very similarly. I've even found some advantages with n8n that I miss with make.com. However, I haven't used n8n for automation in my home lab yet. My use cases were mostly with external services or internal databases. However, I would recommend giving n8n a try, as you can quickly build something that works well.
What Is Your Primary OS Daily Driver
I have two desktops (Win10 Pro and Linux) with my primary daily driver being Linux KDE Neon 6.3.5. Both desktop are linked together using a program called Synergy 3 which allows me to use one set of keyboard and mouse. I can smoothly go between the desktops with the mouse and this also allow me to copy and paste files as well. I also have Bluetooth speakers which is linked to both desktop so I can listen on one and work on the other. I included some pictures.

As an administrator in a Microsoft environment, I usually work on Win11.๐ŸชŸ In my personal life, I'm trying to do more with Linux.๐Ÿง I really liked CachyOS because it feels fast even on older hardware. ๐Ÿ’ป
