Tim’s Current Projects
I always wonder what other people are working on in their business. So I figured I’d share what I’m up to for Q1. 1. A client app/membership program, where they can book services, refer others, earn reward points and more. 2. A robust estimating platform allowing anyone with minimal experience the ability to accurately estimate jobs (trying to idiot proof it) 3. A “while I’m here” service menu. Anytime a tech is in a house they can share this with a client and offer some small repairs while on site. 4. Comapnywide CEO dashboard on PowerBI. We have so many spreadsheets with so much valuable data… but I need a simple and clear visual dashboard to review every day. What are you working on that you’re excited about?

For all you handymen companies out there. My tip is to partner and create a relationship with small Airbnb managers. We are all begging for cooperation and partnerships to trade consistent work for you.

@William Wenger Just google your city you want to target and type something like "Scottsdale airbnb short term rental property manager" Then start cold calling them and ask to speak to the owner or manager about a partnership. Big STR companies usually have in-house handymen so your probably best to stick with 2-20 properties in their portfolio.
Job vs. A Business
On paper, everyone in this group has a business. If we are honest with ourselves, very few of us operate like a business. We have fallen into the typical trap of having built ourselves a job, with the responsibility of a business owner. I don't have enough fingers and toes to count how many people I know that would make more money, work less hours, and have far less stress if they just worked for someone else as a W2 employee. We all know, that's not the point. Each of you have already taken the first step to get out of that trap and truly build something meaningful that can last far beyond yourself. You've taken the initiative to learn the business and implement systems. The real difference is taking all of the information that lives in your head, and documenting everything on paper. Formatted in a way that anyone can perform the functions of your business without question. The best way to learn about the importance of systems and processes is to read the book E-Myth Revisited by Michael E Gerber. Any business can be scaled, don't let the statistics of the handyman trade fool you into thinking it's impossible to scale in our industry. Each one of us are proving that narrative wrong and I believe are on the cusp of a transformative industry change.. all for the better! Reminder - if you want to have something scalable, sellable, and something you can retire from you need to focus your attention on building proper systems for each function of your business.

My go to book is "Buy Back your time" by Dan Martel. I buy it and ship it to my most valued vendors. I want my vendors to be prosperous and successful too. I preach the 1-3-1 method to all my staff. Without it they won't learn to make solid decisions themselves.

I plan on going to a lot of BNI groups. You can go to 2 meetings and advertise your services before you have to pay. Pay for the one in the direct market that you want to be in though. There are so many BNI chapters depending on what city you live in.

Why Coaching & Seminars Suck
For eight years, I was part of the residential real estate industry as a licensed real estate agent. Arguably one of the largest conference and seminar type of industries, where you pay a ton of money to go see people talk with a goal of leaving with tactical information on how to improve your business. Instead, what you typically get is a lot of motivation without any tactical information on how to implement the required steps to become successful in your field. I was always really hesitant to participate or create a group like we have here because of this notion and my past experiences. I was always told and motivated to run through a brick wall, but never was given the step-by-step instructions on how to actually do it. It seems to be a lot of motivation and accountability with no actual process to achieve said success. If you’ve experienced this, you know exactly what I’m talking about. My hope is that this group can be the opposite. A place where we share best practices, and help create step-by-step instructions on how to implement everything necessary to be successful. At any point if I waiver from this commitment, please call me out so I can ensure you guys have the exact process on how to achieve whatever level of success you desire.

I agree, Seminars suck for the reasons you stated above. Working groups and continuous running masterminds are the way to go.
