What moves should be in bag of tricks for foundational mastery?
This came up on a thread, so thought I’d post it as a main post for the benefit of others. What are the foundational moves that need mastery before adding other things? Is it better to have 3-5 moves you’ve mastered on pass rush than trying to learn a lot of things - bc there’s a lot you could learn. Hope that makes sense.
Mason Wheeler Final Camps 1/1s
We had Colgate camp Saturday and Fordham camp Sunday. Ran a 4.7 at both camps weighing in at 223. At this stage, height has been the main issue with coaches recruiting bodies vs players. He’s a big skill guy with lineman strength, but can’t show power in most these camps. So now it’s on to preparing for season and senior film.

Thanks is for the feedback and input. It’s the technical skills we are working on now. It’s hard in shorts and helmets to get a real feel. Some of the camp stuff are what coaches wanted to see from past camps or conversations. In this case, these guys wanted to see something other than bull or just run the edge. Most of the time, he’s going to have some kind of combo between power to speed or speed to power. You can’t be a master at everything, so he’s trying to keep a tighter focus on a smaller bag of tricks that he excels at, and have some others that he may not be as good at, but are there situationally. @Nicholas Dheilly that would be something helpful, what are the foundational moves that players should have mastery of that they will Build on? I’ll post a question as a post.
EMU One on One Eval
Mason had a good camp last night at Eastern Michigan. Couldn't get great views. If we took away anything, coaches said that speed to power and power are good, they want to see counters. Literally said it a dozen times. Said if he could get those down, he's going to have a big year. FYI, a pair of orange shorts and neon yellow duct tape strip made it super simple to see who's who. I Figured more people would do that.
