In my classes, I believe it is highly important that we read first hand accounts of the events. I give content warnings, but I never believe in hiding the truth from my students. I love this reflection from a kid on first hand accounts we read of the aftermath of a civil war battle: "In many classes, we discuss the why of war, but never the what. I never knew how dark and twisted war was and what soldiers went through. I wish things were taught how they are, not sugar coated because soldiers deserve to have their stories told."
