If you’re just learning to create the surface model of a product then it is surface modeling. Product design means designing the product, and you need to consider various aspects such as who is it for, why does it exist, what ergonomy should it consider, what type of battery will you use and how big is the battery, where to place the battery, how will it be made, what material, etc. Designing is a process that involves so much more than just jumping right into modeling without understanding the why of what you’re doing.
