Had an interesting coaching call last week… One of my clients was working with a guy who discovered his wife was cheating. But instead of confronting her... The guy just sat on it. Didn't say a word. Even reached out to the other man first... (Who casually confirmed everything.) But STILL couldn't bring himself to have that conversation with his wife. This reminded me of something that happened to me years ago... I got a call from a friend telling me my partner was cheating. And you know what I did? I literally couldn't process it. Like... My brain just wouldn't accept the information. I was having dinner with my parents at the time. They could tell something was wrong. But when they asked if I was okay... I just said "I don't think so" and walked to the kitchen. Laid down on the floor. And stayed there ALL night 😂 Couldn't move. Couldn't talk. Couldn't think. Just... shock. I mention it because as coaches, it's easy to get frustrated when our clients "refuse" to take action. Especially with relationship stuff. We KNOW what they need to do. We can see the solution clear as day. We just want them to GET ON WITH IT. But sometimes... People literally CAN'T process painful information right away. Their brain won't let them. It's not stubbornness. It's not resistance. It's not even denial. It's their mind protecting them until they're ready to heal. That's why relationship coaching is different from business coaching, for example. With business, we can push hard for immediate action. "Here's what you need to do. Go do it." But relationships? Sometimes we need to create a safe space. Hold their hand a bit. Give them time to process. Because you can't FORCE someone to be ready. Even if you think they "should" be. Just something to keep in mind next time you're working with a client who seems "stuck." You might be dealing with shock... not stubbornness.
