December is going to be all about how to design with story in mind. Which segues perfectly into the cohort I am launching in January that will help comic artists publish their first comic in 90 days! What’s your favorite part of worldbuilding?
My comics are set on Earth in the modern day, but I enjoy making a decision as to how that universe diverges from ours, and then explore the possibilities. Aliens replace nuclear weapons with superheroes? Conventional warfare is back! If conventional warfare is back, hawks are probably ascendant! If hawks are ascendant, India and Pakistan are probably hacking away at each other like mad things, Ukraine is gone... Could an unusually powerful Tibetan superhero tip the India/China tension in India's favour? How about socialist superheroes in Latin America? Would there be a new Allende-era Chile... Or a new Chavez-era Venezuela? What would the Catholic Church do with a superhero? Amnesty International? UNICEF? How would America continue to throw it's weight around, particularly under the neofascist leadership of Tru- er, "the 47th President"? It's fun knocking one domino over and then having to work out for yourself what other ones are going to fall.
Howdy, new here, I finished this Mayan God flash piece last night, I used 12/7rl, 10/9cm, and reel skin. Any feedback/criticism would be appreciated, thank you 🙏
Your tattoo looks very new school in style, but new school and black-and-grey aren't a great mix IMO. I'd do some really crazy, vivid Kelly Doty-esque colour. Can I ask where you work?
For me it was too many ideas. I had a series of "moments" but not a story. And I also felt like it had to be perfect from the get go which kept me from even starting.
I can't remember, because my first comic was a serial webcomic I created during that funny little Keenspace dot com webcomic boom around the early 2000s. 😉 I just jumped into it, drew as much as I could, and it wasn't great by my standards, but it got me working hard for awhile and I was held accountable by a handful of readers who enjoyed my emo story and funny characters. I actually intend to use the characters in a new longer-form format in a few years, but for now, I have my other project over been writing and am about to draw. All that's stopping me right now is practical issues; my screen tablet is faulty, I'm moving to a new house in a week or two, and I need to find good, cheap pagination/lettering software for comic-making. Illustrator is effective, I might use my student status to get a more cost-effective Adobe CC subscription. But I've been writing hard for ages now, haven't been sitting on my hands!
I struggled for many years with drawing the female form and figure. Has anyone else struggled with this? What have been your biggest challenges with human anatomy?
With the female figure, I have trouble defying my instincts and making the hips wide enough and low enough. As I draw them, in always thinking, "no! That's too wide, go narrower!" etc. No wonder I have an easier time drawing guys (which is why I don't bother drawing guys for fun very much; I prefer a greater challenge). I think I get the roundedness of feminine limbs quite right, I actually find it more difficult to employ straight lines and draw skinny limbs, because at the sketch stage, skinny limbs are less ovoid, and more rectangular, which clashes with my sketching habits. I think.
