Construction Industry & Generative AI
Most of us have heard the phrase that AI will change everything and it’s understandable, considering the numerous trends that have come and gone. However, what’s happening right now is worth paying attention to. Teams are significantly reducing design time from weeks to hours, estimators are receiving initial breakdowns in minutes, project managers are identifying schedule risks before they escalate, and the overwhelming paperwork is being automated, not by replacing experienced individuals, but by relieving them of the burdensome and time-consuming tasks. While it may not be flawless and requires some effort to implement, the firms that are quietly experimenting today are building an advantage that will be challenging to overcome in the future. We encourage you to share your experiences. Have you tried any of these tools on a real project? What were the outcomes, what didn’t work, and what are you still learning? Please share your insights in the comments, ask any questions you may have, and let’s engage in a meaningful discussion about the trajectory of this industry. 👇
What Estimating Software Do You Actually Need?
So (please prove me wrong), all estimating software is fundamentally built around 3 core features: 1. Take-off tools. Every business needs one of these, the two main ones are planswift and Bluebeam. I love Bluebeam but a lot of people hate it. Its just he one I'm used to 2. Managing cost/productivity/quantity databases- ie storing labor, plant, material, subcontractor rates 3. Preparing prices - combining quantities with rates etc. For most contractors, all you need is a quantity take off tool and excel. There are trade specific tools, but they often just have more data and are tailored towards trade specific workflows And AI just adds intelligence to this process. Ie can convert bid documents into requirements, or automatically extract quantities from drawings I did a breakdown in this video. If you like + comment it helps the algorithm!

@Tim Fairley I have recently came across the utility of Generative AI. It is some thing called development and deployment of Agentic Apps using LLMs.Have you heard about it?
Built a Custom GPT that helps with SWMS
900 million people use ChatGPT every week. That's not just a tool...it's a network! You're here on Skool. You're probably on LinkedIn? Are you on ChatGPT? When someone asks ChatGPT a question in your field — you could be the answer. Not your website on page 3 of Google. You. Directly. Under your name. A Custom GPT is a version of ChatGPT built around what you already know. No code. No ad spend. Literally an afternoon of work. We built one for safety compliance in Australian construction and am curious for your feedback. I recorded how we did it below.

@Ari Nakos Its really new thing for me even though I regularly use ChatGPT
Claude Code Applied to Construction
So Claude Code has been getting a lot of hype recently And I have to be 100% honest, it did not disappoint What is it and why does it matter for construction? Claude code lets you build and run code. All you do is express what you want in plain english, and Claude will build it for you "I want to build a tool that pulls my accounting data from Qucikbooks and compares it to my project estimates to determine my planned vs actual cost" "I want to build a tool that checks my email daily and flags any commercial issues." "Everytime I get a new tender, I want you to download it and update my CRM" Literally describe what you want and Claude will build it for you. You can then run these workflows over and over again as needed I have built some really useful tools over the last couple of weeks. Basically anytime you are moving data between software, databases, you can automate this with claude code. Very cool Here is a video demo, if people want to support the channel, like and comment, it helps the algorithm!

@Tim Fairley I guess its next big thing
Introduce Yourself
I'm keen to hear who everybody is, and what their goals are I assume you already know who I am. But if you don't I'm Tim. I worked for 8 years for big contractors on road, rail, renewable energy projects. I've always worked for head-contractors. I recently worked for some smaller contractors as a consultant when I left my job doing estimating and contract management. It was good, but I found it hard to see a path to scale (other than just starting a contracting business myself) So I instead decided to build software, and found that that's 100x harder than I thought and a very easy way to lose money

@Tim Fairley for sure you should. Amalaa Triple Bay project is a new luxurious tourist destination. It has Marina, Staff Village, Four Seasons, Six Senses,Rosewood, Integrative Wellness, Ocean Golf, Wellness 3 as its constituent projects each of which is itself is a huge project for its Scope ,Constraints, and its landscape and last but not the least marine environment.these being fast track projects with ever increasing scope, variations tight timelines and Quality demand. Its really changing to work with no shift off timings just work work work. Clients Delivery team is on their toes every moment just to push to finsh the activity meanwhile quality is notnletting any compromise on quality wise. its literally fun to be squeezed 😂
