What happened to Nordstrom's shoes?
I walked into a Nordstrom today for the first time in a while and saw I was near the shoe section. Total coincidence, I swear. Well mostly. Ok I wanted to see some shoes, alright? And some other things, but yes, the shoes. I can stop anytime I want, ok? Anyways... ...I start looking around and I see the dreaded "dress sneaker." Ok, whatever, move on, let's find the dress shoes. Ok, these are cemented Cole Haans with rubber soles. So are these. And so are these, or maybe Nordstrom brand? I keep looking, and praise be eventually I find the Magnannis--off on the very edge of the shoe section on what looks like a reject table. And it's ONLY Magnannis with all rubber soles! I eventually asked someone working there and confirm what I had already figured out: Nordstrom no longer sells ANY shoes with leather soles! This was where I first discovered Allen Edmonds and Salvatore Ferragamo, etc., and the concept that there was something better than cemented rubber soles. And now they've done away with them. I went next door to Macy's, and it just got depressing. Their shoe section was self-serve boxes on shelves like at Target, and the best on offer was a handful of Johnston & Murphy. I didn't look any closer, and I have a couple pair of J&M myself (vintage) so who knows, but given that the store was nothing but mediocre menswear as far as the eye could see, I doubt there were any hidden gems hiding there.
