Footed shafts
By request here are some images of footed shafts. These are from the late great arrowsmith and friend of my fathers- David Cartwright formerly of Goodrich Ontario Canada. David was a true craftsman and was the owner of Arrowmaker Traditions. A footed shaft is an arrow reinforced at the front end by splicing a stronger, denser piece of hardwood (such as walnut or purpleheart). This enhances durability, and adds weight to the front of the shaft as well. These below are both v cut joints and are made on 23/64ths Ramen wood shafts. The footings are purple heart on top and Brazilian Rosewood on shaft below. He has taken several deer with these with no breakage.

I’ve seen some pics of footed cedar shafts with Purple Heart and Bacote, Very beautiful! I’ve never used them before though. I’ve also heard of guys footing carbons with aluminum shafts, kinda the FMJ effect.

@Colton Deline I’m a sucker for Zebrawood. My longbow has Zebrawood on the back, it’s always been one of my favorites for bow woods.
Longbow
What's the best longbow you have owned or still own and what did you like so much about it? Im officially completely out of the compound game as of today. I'm told I don't have a lot of time with this cancer thing but who knows. What time I have left I want to spend shooting traditional equipment. I am going to devote myself this year to the longbow so I'm in the market. Thanks in advance.

I’m currently shooting a Kalamazoo Bow Works 64” Manitou, made here in Michigan. It’s a very mild deflex/heavy reflex design with a 16” riser. It shoots smooth with no hand shock, I love it! Dave also offers 2 other reflex/deflex designs with longer risers and also a takedown.
New 3D Target and some afternoon shooting.
Celebrated by 36th Birthday this week and finally the weather improved. I received a new buck target and got to fling some arrows. Theres always that one arrow...

Summer, Where Art Thou? Also, Test Run with Cresting.
Starting to seriously wonder if we are even going to get Summer in Alberta this year. It snowed yesterday, tried again today, and we are expecting a low of -16 degrees Celsius tonight. This is unreal—we are 20 degrees below our average temp for this time of year. Anyways, I was finally able to get into the garage and do a staining and cresting run. You know just testing colours, the paint brushes, and rigged up a super hick cresting machine that works decent enough. The stain I got is more on the greyer side than I was hoping but it will do. The wine red colour I got is a little off, but after adding a bit of black I was able to achieve the proper tone. I’m interested to check them in the morning to see final colours. I forgot to take a picture to share—not that it’s picture worthy in the slightest 🤣 I’m glad I did the test because I had to trouble shoot a bit—the paint was bleeding into the grain. Learned/remembered that I should use a thin layer of my polycrylic before cresting. If anyone has any tips, anything at all, put them below. I’m all ears at this point. Oh, I did film how I “poor man” splice my feathers. I’ll get that up hopefully soon.

I have a Bohning crester I bought about 17 years ago. I’ve seen pics and heard of some pretty ingenious dyi creations, I think the sewing machine is probably the most common one.
Today’s switch shooting

Your posts give me a desire to get a left handed bow, I think it’s very cool!

@Jarrod Floyd I’m thinking probably after bow season. After my shoulder heals up I’ll be focused on making sure my shooting is good for hunting this year.

There’s nothing so satisfying as the soft twang of the string and the hearty thump of a well placed arrow. Longbows Forever! 🏹
