Daily Wins, the Rules of 3, and Journaling
Journaling. Last month when I crossed over into my 60's I decided I was going to journal daily. It takes about 30 days for something to become a daily habit and my journaling has. I dedicate one page to each day and I purposefully write out in long hand my random thoughts about the day. Rules of 3. I once worked for a general officer who only wanted to be briefed in his rules of three. "Tell me three things that you feel I should know and be involved in directly. " He told us. Ever since then, on any briefing or paper I concentrate on only three things I feel is important at the time. In this case in my journal I look for 3 Wins Daily. The First Win is at work. What did I accomplish or what went right. How did I make things better for my team. The Second Win is what did I do for my wife to make her day easy or show my appreciation. Win Three is what did I do for myself. Three wins a day. My day consists of three active parts. Morning, Afternoon, Evening. Night is for my body to regenerate while I sleep. I set out to do at least three things at work. Like I mentioned I limit my comments to one page. Sometimes there is not much but at least I reflected on the day and identified my wins. Good penmanship is important to me so every page is legible. I use a good pen, one that is comfortable in my hand. I don't dwell on what I wrote the day before - I may look at it but I don't relive what I have written. It is past and tomorrow I am working to be conscious of my three daily wins.
