Modern Tone Tips?
Been trying to record some one man band prog stuff and even though I'm happy with the material, when I show people the finished product they always say I sound like I belong in the mid 2000s. Don't get me wrong I love that era but my goal is definitely for something more modern. I've moved away from the typical 5-7-8 riffing style for a while now so I don't think it's the material itself. I know it's hard to answer this without hearing it but I'm thinking maybe someone might say the right thing that nudges me in the right direction. I'm definitely using too much gain on the amp but I can't find a tone I like with less. I'm not scooping the mids either I like the clarity it brings from boosting them. Anyone got any ideas? There's gotta be something so obvious that I haven't checked yet.

@David Stevens things like Killswitch engage, system, Linkin Park, bullet for my Valentine etc. they definitely sound unique from each other but there's a lot of similarities. I'm thinking my mix could also be the issue too who knows
Amps
I made a post about mini Amps the other day, now let’s talk about the “standard” size amps. What’s your go to for gigs, home, studio, etc? For me my go to is a classic: Line 6 Spider 2

I use the Peavey Vypyr VIP 2. Technically an amp modeler with a speaker but it's the size of a bigger combo amp. Lets me select between all the main Peavey models, 6505, XXX etc and has all the fx I need with its own pedal to control all of it. Best amp id recommend for anyone looking for a combo. Except today id go with the VIP 3

Strings preference
Hello Everyone, This is primarily for the bass players, but everyone chip in! I am currently looking to upgrade my strings on my 5 string bass. The set currently is the ones that came from Leo jaymz and I have D'Addario Electric Guitar Strings, XL Nickel, EXL110, Regular Light Gauge 10-46 on the way. Are there other brands/types that anyone prefers or recommends? I mainly play rock/metal but have a bit of blues here and there. I look forward to seeing what everyone has preferences on and why.

Guitarist here, buying a bass tomorrow though so if anyone has recommendations for 5 string metal playing let me know. On my 6 string I like Daddario NYXL Light Top Heavy bottom. On my 7 I run NYXL Medium gauge balanced tension. These things last FOREVER and almost never dull out.

@Christopher Andersen that's dope. Building it yourself makes it one of a kind. Been eyeing some of those kits myself but I'm prioritizing gear for my record. By the time I had all the parts I wanted in my cart it was twice the price of an already built guitar. 😅 One day I'll get around to it

What’s one guitar that you’ll never get rid of. For me it’s all of them lol I’m not the buy sell trade type I buy for specific reasons and they all mean something different to me but the tele is by far my favorite one I’ve ever bought.

My buddy gave me his EC257 because he doesn't play it anymore and I needed a 7 string to play in my band with him. Parting with it would just feel disrespectful. Got some some knobs OTW for it and might upgrade the pickups soon. Got rid of my Dean MLX a while ago cuz I thought the woodgrain was ugly. Today I regret it that thing was my workhorse for a while and has seen a lot of key points in my growth as a musician
