How should you come up with a research/engineering topic?
I am a rising freshman, about to compete in the high school science fair circuit. What is your advice on how to come up with a meaningful and competitive engineering topic?

I'm also a rising freshman who wants to do science fairs! Honestly i recommend watching preaching p's video on how he did independent research. Preaching p was Rishabh's science fair "rival"" and they did a few video collabs together. Rishab gives you a good idea on what's the purpose of research is and the basics of it so i recommend you watch his playlist on how to do research. But i think his method of finding a research topic is pretty tedious. Preaching p gives you a really good clear cut method of how to find a research topic. But right now I would during this summer i would highly recommend you learn how to code while figure out what exact subtopics you want to do in engineering. The reason why is because learning how to use model software is pretty hard and takes a long time. (it took me 8 hours a day for 2 weeks to be able to use blender "decently".) And if your in engineering you'll likely have multiple software's you need. And while you do this take the time to learn how to code. I used to do a lot of 3d modeling, 2d animation, and video editing and quit doing most of those things because i had to use coding to be able to use a lot of free software's. Also if you research project isn't about cutting to cost of something in half you might end up broke so you might need to learn how to simulate a model in some software. I suggest you take cs50x to get a general knowledge of coding. It will teach you multiple langue's and taught by Harvard. Its self paced but people usually take 1 lecture per week and there 9 lectures in total. But you can totally do the first 2-3 in half a week if you lock in.
How to find a good CS mentor?
Hey guys, during the last school year, I have wanted to publish a research paper about AI over the summer, but to publish in something like arxiv, I need to get some kind of endorsement, so how do get someone who is very experienced in AI(such as a CS or AI professor) to at least give me some kind of validation when publishing my paper?

if your in the usa you can apply to mit think which mit gives you free mentoring although you wont be able to present the research until next year, Or you get a mentor from jshs (a science competion) I don't know how good the mentors are but you can choose you mentor and the only cost of a mentor from jshs is that you have to compete.
Why I hate Korea's educational system
Korea is known for its K-pop, dramas, and movies. Though I am thankful that many people think positively of the country I live in, I came to realize that people don't know how much 'education' is torturing students in Korea. < Hagwons> Heard of 'Hagwons'? They are specialized, private for-profit institutes that students go after school, and students stay in there for time ranging from 50 minutes to 6 hours. There are about 89000 hagwons in Korea, and most likely you will see them everywhere beside residential homes. Basically, hagwon is a mini school. But the things that students are taught go beyond what public schools teach; for example, there are many many middle schoolers who finished the highschool curriculum, all thanks to hagwons. At first glance, hagwons might not look bad. But please read on. Those who are sent to hagwons were probably forced by his/her parent. From the students I have met, all of them hated going to hagwons. But their parents forced them anyways. Even if you are passionate about learning, you probably won't want to go to hagwons. A highschoool student's schedule might look like this: after school, go to english, math, Korean literature, and Science hagwon, go home, do hagwon and school hw until 2AM, sleep for less than 4 hours. Nobody, nobody likes this... But the students have to adapt to this forcing, creativeless education. <Parent & Education> Hagwons are so normalized in Korea, most parents send their child to at least one hagwon. They think that it for their children to send them to hagwons. I would say many parents in Korea, and other Asian countries have a tendency to be jealous; they have hightened awarness about others. This is actually proven in a study; 10 Korean and American parents were scanned by FMRI. They were to engage in a small game, where either, they were given points or the other player lost points. For Korean parents, their reward part of the brain was activated when the other lost points. For the American parents, they felt rewarded when they themselves got more points. So basically, Korean parents feel better when Others suffer, get sad when Others are praised. This is very much shown in how parents treat their child; they see them as mere products to show off, a mean of comparison rather than someone to love. I mean parents do love their child, but their jealousy takes control of them time to time.

I had some online friends that were into kpop and they actually glamorize Korean schools and hagwons a lot. One of them started going to kumon so she can see what its like💀 (i stopped talking to her) But they think its cool because extracurriculars don't matter and that you basically live at school with your friends. They actually think the American college system is trash and that grades should be the only thing that gets you into college even though they had like 2.0s in online school💀 And for the international club there's this video from pearychot on you tube and she gives out a lot of good advice on how to start and get opportunities for a non profit / club. But for the club i'd make it a non profit or incitive about giving people an opportunity to share out and network their idea's, nonprofits, opportunities in conferences. The main event of the club would be the opportunity to have a conference where they can present anything like their new ideas, their non profits, their research their inspirational story, their perspective on things and then have it posted on youtube. (basically ted talks but for highschoolers/middleschoolers). Out side of the conferences id make websites and put out some resources like workshops and courses that clubs can work on (look at hackclub.com and see would i mean.) And maybe start skool fourm for all the clubs to talk about anything and then put out additional resources like zoom meetings with guest speakers.
Best note-taking method?
I am going to high school in August, and I have heard that taking notes is essential. How do you guys take notes?

I take non liner connected notes like mind maps, diagrams, flow charts and that kind of stuff. i helps me use less words and more visualization. It also helps me think of the big idea of the topic im learning and how everything is connected.
Would this make sense?
Most of my posts here have been about psychology and mental health, showing that I most likely want to do that in college. I want to study neuroscience in college because it is close to psychology and has a lot of med school prerequisites in its coursework already (less added work). However, for most extracurriculars, I plan for it to be around psychology, because I am most passionate about that. But, I read that you should have your extracurriculars around the degree you want to pursue. Do you think having psychology extracurriculars will limit my chances of getting into a top college when I want to have a neuroscience degree?

Honestly keep on doing psychology and maybe during the start of jr year or jr year summer do some research or some sort of ec about psychology and the brain. And the schools would probably understand that you enjoy and is well knowledge about both subjects but choose neuro cuz ur pred med.
