Trying to pivot my career path
Hey guys! I’ve been in the sales world for about 18 years as a Sommelier and Benefit advisor. I enjoy finding new business and developing that relationship. My father and uncles are all truck drivers and have been the majority of my life.I’ve been really curious about freight and with my background and education I’m particularly drawn to international freight. Ive had the chance to hunt around at different brokers and see if anyone is willing to train or what an entry level position would look like, but without an existing book of business no one is really giving me the time of day. I’m currently enrolled in some online courses so I can learn the basics and attempt to make myself less of a risk, but I could use any and all advice from all of you savants currently in the field! Thanks for reading!

If you are interested in international freight you should join a freight forwarder. A freight agent/broker does not see near as many international opportunities as a freight forwarder.
Very First Freight Job
What was your very first job that had to do with freight? It wasn't a job for me but I remember my step dad had a Beverage Route. A delivery driver for a bottling distributor, as I recall it was Canada Dry, Double Cola etc During the summer when school was out I had to drive every day with him on his route. (Bet you with insurance, laws and regulations this isn't permitted today) I loved the job because mainly it entailed me driving around in what I thought was big truck watching him take sodas into the stores while I sipped on a Yoohoo. 🤣 Do you think this is why I love Freight? 🫠

@Nick Padgett VERY cool! I remember when Manheim started Ready Logistics... the owner of the company wanted to keep using paper logs to transport cars... I was like uhhhh its 2014.. haha, easy to see that industry needed a tech revolution. Congrats on your contributions!

@Nick Padgett It was a "Drive-Away" service called Auto-Truck Transfers, Inc. Again, no car haulers, but rather drivers that physically drove the cars to their destination and Ford Econoline "chase vans" that moved the drivers to their next pickup point. It was unique as most people just assume all cars are moved on haulers. We had "transporter" plates that always start with XP. That's an easy way to spot a transporter.
