Honest answers... Studio Dread vs Joy — what’s yours?👀
I’m really curious about this one because my answer has completely flipped recently… After being away from the studio for a while, I’m honestly just loving every single minute I get in there right now. Yesterday I finished teaching a throwing workshop… and instead of cleaning up straight away, I thought “well, the wheel’s already messy…” — so I jumped on and had a couple hours of throwing myself. And wow… it just flowed. Everything felt more consistent, more natural… and I had SO much fun. It reminded me exactly why I love this. Today? Slightly different story 😅After a couple of hours trimming hedges, I’m heading back into the studio — but it’s handling multiple mugs, big buckets of mucky reclaim, and a full clean-up session… Normally I would dread this kind of day. Reclaim that’s been sitting for months (yes… it’s going to be stinky 😂), buckets everywhere, and a proper mop-down needed. But honestly? I’m still really looking forward to it. I think because I’ve finally got systems and little “hacks” in place for reclaim, it actually feels… satisfying now? Plus Mug handling is never as bad once I get into the flow...usually 🤣 If I had to pick, trimming and refining is probably still my favourite — but really, it’s the variety and experimentation that keeps me hooked. So now I’d love to know… 👉 What’s your favourite part of studio life?👉 And what’s the job you tend to put off the most? (No judgement — we all have one! 😄)

My happy time is throwing pieces on the wheel and craft fair days. Once I start glazing I enjoy it, but put it off as long as possible. Throwing will always be my happy place.

I have been throwing for ten years. I do anything up to three pounds easily, then I have to work at centering, but have thrown about six pounds. Most of my mugs are one to 1.5 pounds. It took a few years of steady throwing to develop good upper arm muscles and form. Now I can go thru 25 to 75 lbs of clay in a throwing session before I quit for the day. If the first piece goes bad then I find something else to do that day. I am 73, so expect to slow down in next ten years
Does Obsidian break on texture?
I have a request for a black sweater mug and I'm wondering if anyone here can show me obsidian on texture. I'm wondering if it breaks nicely. also if you have another black glaze that breaks nicely please leave the name of the glaze and a picture. Thank you for any help you can give me.

Obsidian does not show texture well
Turtle bank
My turtle bank is finally glazed. I wheel through the top and bottom, then added the flowers. Had to make Maxine’s turtle idea into a bank. She will stay with me for now.

@Maxine Colleypit Pottery thank you for doing the teaching on turtles. I won’t make many, but will have fun each time!
🎨 Guess the Glaze Challenge 🎨
Inspired by @Andrea MacLeod , I thought it would be fun to bring a little more playfulness into our daily life! 💫 Here’s the idea: Under this post, share one or two photos of your piece that has been glazed using a combination of two glazes layered together. Then let the community guess which glazes you used!❓❓❓ Rules: - Use two glazes layered together - Additives like Band of Light Flux or Honey Flux don’t count as separate glazes - Combinations like one glaze + one Jungle Gem are totally fine - After posting, give others 48 hours to guess your glaze combination before revealing it This is all about having fun, sparking curiosity, and maybe even rediscovering some beautiful glaze combinations—new or old.🫟 It’s also a great chance to show what you’ve been working on lately and get inspired by each other’s pieces. Hope you’re in—let’s give it a try! ✨

@Andrea MacLeod glazes are coyote gun metal green, blue purple and red gold swirled in 2 layers and splattered with hot running chowder. Check with company for clay compatibility as all three will flake off some clays.

@Suza Roswandowicz be sure to check clay match with coyote as all three will flake off on some clays, often weeks after firing. I use a white stoneware.
Fountain
Fountains are a large bowl which is then attached to a handleless mug that is wider at the bottom. A hole is made between the attached area that measures at least 1/2”. Be sure no leakage can occur. Then throw the shape of your choice for water to pour into the bowl. It must be wide enough to sit on the cylinder base. A hole that fits the tubing is made in the bottom area that sits on the cylinder. The cylinder needs to be about 1/2” or taller than the bowl. The tiny pump (1 to 1 1/2” square) can be found on Amazon. Tubing from local plumbing section of hardware store. The attaching hole between bowl and cylinder needs to rest below bowl waterline. Have fun. Do not glaze till you are sure joint to bowl is water tight.
