I want to warn other freelancers about a scam targeting talented developers. I was contacted by someone claiming to be Brittany Chabot, Project Supervisor, offering a freelance project. They said my payment would be processed through Windsor Public Library and asked for my bank details to upload to their “payment portal.” Here’s why it’s a scam: 1. Fake company info – A public library does not pay freelancers like this. 2. Unprofessional communication – They used a Gmail address (windsorpubliclibrary652@gmail.com) and even added emojis. 3. Pressure tactics – They kept saying things like “upload your details in less than 5 minutes” to rush me. 4. Fake fees – They asked me to buy a “SAFF Membership Card” to get my “salary.” Real clients never ask freelancers to pay to get paid. 5. Promises of instant payment – Scammers often promise quick money, but it never happens. I only shared my IBAN and basic bank info, which cannot be used to steal money. I did not share OTPs, PINs, passwords, or email access, which would have been dangerous. Key lessons: - Always check if the client’s email and company are real. - Never pay money to get paid. - Use secure payment platforms like Payoneer, Wise, Upwork escrow, or PayPal. - Ignore pressure, fake portals, or membership fees.
