Good Company
Remember registering for college classes when you’d connect with your friends to make sure you got into the same section? This is that moment for Ictus. Until now, it’s mostly grown by personal invitation. On March 15, we’ll open it more broadly and the membership rate will increase (not yours, just new members). If there’s a conductor you respect...someone thoughtful, serious about growth, and generous in conversation...you’re welcome to invite them to join you at the founding rate ($10/month) before March 15th. I'm excited about the way this founding group is shaping the Institute and I’d like that trajectory to continue. If someone comes to mind who should be in the room with us, please reach out to them. Grateful for each of you! Rob

How to prepare orchestra parts
I'm so intimidated by this. There seem to be tons of errors in a lot of parts. What's the best way to go about this process before rehearsals?

That's a really good question. @Amy Owens , are you referring to older, I'm thinking IMSLP available, works that are often handwritten or not in clear notation? Or arrangements where mistakes were made in the process? I like to sit down with my score and listen to recordings trying to catch errors. If it's a visibility issue where interpretation is a bit nebulous, sometimes a deeper dive into the music theory is necessary.

I had a wonderful interview with Delta David Geir. He gives such powerful insights into our craft. And, he definitely answered your questions, @Danielle Brady and @Ally Bartlett

Finally finished watching this – such good nuggets of wisdom! I would wholeheartedly agree with his assessment. Student musicians haven't been taught how to actively listen in order to develop a deep appreciation for their craft. I would be curious to see if an educational mindset shift of setting aside time to listen thoughtfully and intentionally would yield more impactful rehearsal time with our students. I think so often we see our time with them as precious and scarce (and rightfully so) to the point where we don't incorporate some of those other skills that students need to develop into well-rounded musicians. I would love to know what anyone else who works with students thinks of his assessment!
Delta David Gier Questions
As it turns out, my FIRST interview will be tomorrow with Maestro Delta David Gier. https://www.deltadavidgier.com He is brilliant and such a generous spirit. What questions would you like me to ask? (also, see my previous post about Dr. Scheibe's interview which is happening Wednesday)

1. What rehearsal techniques would you use to keep students engaged in an era where student musicians' attention spans are shortening more and more? 2. How do you see the role of conductors and the focus/goal of rehearsal time evolving as time with students is steadily being cut short by other obligations, class scheduling, etc.? 3. For the string teacher, how can I better reach my wind/brass/percussion students during rehearsal? What's in your "toolbox" of analogies, phrases, tips, etc.? I'd love to hear Dr. Scheibe answer any of those as well!
