Prep Beats and Brahms
Hi friends - here is a fun exercise for us today. I have uploaded three different conductors leading Brahms Symphony No. 1. Each of them approach the beginning differently. Which one do you prefer and why? Is there one among them that, if they were one of your fellow Ictus members, you could give them some guidance? What would that be? Karajan https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxPwPiVdKEds-GHOwMYf3jePnAk0hoAd9y?si=g8067D0yq4uuGL4E Haenchen https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxnlC7UU2hA_kVrE2Yx54UU5NXKKCNk6JW?si=ynHyG7CLibatvJOs Franz Welser-Möst https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxDMXpHJx_jmxOflk_yYJ8--bXSC9Xa3rl?si=USJsrtfYBS4zAnhK

Wow, these are great clips. Thanks Rob! Karajan makes it fail-proof by giving the tempo before the prep. I'm really glad to see that it's ok to do that. :) I'll probably use that technique for pieces that may be complicated to get everyone starting together, especially if there's not a lot of rehearsal time. I like how Haenchen's approach feels like a full breath, with a very clear length, but still requires the orchestra to subdivide on their own. I don't have any advice for them, except maybe "KNOW YOUR ORCHESTRA." :)
How to prepare orchestra parts
I'm so intimidated by this. There seem to be tons of errors in a lot of parts. What's the best way to go about this process before rehearsals?

@Robert Bigley Yes! Just generally checking individual instrumental parts before rehearsal. You have a good point (above) about REALLY knowing the score if you go through every part individually!

📌 Welcome to the Ictus Institute
This is a place for CONDUCTORS—choir, band, orchestra—at any stage of their career—to share, learn, and grow together. 💡 How to jump in: 1️⃣ Post a question, challenge, or insight from your rehearsals. 2️⃣ Reply to someone else’s post—share what worked (or didn’t) for you. 3️⃣ Explore the Foundations Course and the Classroom to dive deeper into topics that come up in conversation. 🤝 Our approach: Think of this community as collective wisdom in action. The value comes from what we share, not from any single expert. 🌟 Why we’re here: Basically, this is the sort of community I’ve always wanted for conductors—a place to ask, reflect, and learn with colleagues who truly get it—with access every day (not just at conferences and festivals) 🧠 Mindset: Bring curiosity. Bring perspective. Make it useful, make it fun. 🚀 First step: Your first post makes this place come alive—jump in and start the conversation! — Robert Bigley, DMA Founder, The Ictus Institute
