Was Krashen right, 40 years later?
Was Krashen right, 40 years later? It's a question we'll ask the legendary Bill VanPatten later today. We're thrilled and honoured to interview Bill for our Teacher Talking Time podcast and will get into many things.Krashen's theories for many reasons are still quite contentious in our field. Bill co-authored a paper with Lichten in 2021 reviewing Krashen's Monitor Theory 40 years on. We'll start there, but there's so much to discuss with Bill. We're even more thrilled since Bill is actually retired and agreed to come on the show. I'm curious, what would you love to ask Bill? Are there any particular language concepts or theories you're itching for him to dive deeper into? Drop your questions below 👇 and I'll make sure to bring them up during our chat.🙃

Recording: Webinar with Cecilia Nobre
Here's the recording of today's workshop with Cecilia Nobre. Cecilia talks about using video-based lessons as a way to make learning more dynamic. She also touches on adding a Dogme approach to this. There are many potential challenges to using videos: - what about proficiency level? - how long should a video be? - how do we choose a video? Cecilia walks us through all of this, shows us how to grade the task, and how to use a transferable process for each student and still make it personalized. What are your biggest takeaways from this session? Drop them below and let's continue the discussion. Enjoy the weekend! P.S. Cecilia has a new book out - check it out here. She also was kind enough to share 17 authentic videos she likes to use in class - see that here.

2023 Goal: Consistency
Happy New Year, everyone! Do you make goals every January 1? My goal for 2023: Consistency. Many people make resolutions this time of year. And that’s wonderful, but new goals and aspirations require new systems. A goal without a plan is merely a dream, after all. For me, starting and implementing new habits is cumbersome and also distracts from the good ones I spent the last 12 months cultivating. So, for the first part of this year, I’m not striving for new things. Rather, I’m striving to maintain the good habits I’ve already developed. This also revolves around the person I want to be, not the things I want to do. In 2023, there are three people I want to be: 1. I want to continue being a person who reads. 2. I want to continue being a person who exercises. 3. I want to continue being a person who learns. If I self-assess, I’d say I did very well last year being a person who shows up. And that’s what I want to continue doing. For now, in the same areas. Those are three people that - when they show up - I find myself happiest with my life. What person do you want to be in the first quarter of 2023? Here’s a sentence frame I like using: I want to continue being a person who ____________. Try it for yourself and see what you come up with. Share your version below if you're comfortable. And happy new year!

As a reminder for me, because I always want to start things but rarely bring them to an end.

@Andrew Woodbury For some it is not time yet.... I realize looking back at my list. Some of them I still want and have a burning desire to see them accomplished. Most of the things I still want to do, but I can;t do them all at the same time :)
Google Meets for groups - Breakout Rooms
Hello everyone! Season Greetings to all of you! I'm launching some workshops for this summer and I'm considering using Google Meets (mainly because of Zoom's time limit). Has any of you used it with groups? Do the Breakout Rooms work well? Do you find it a good option or do you think paying Zoom's fee is worth it? Thanks a lot for your advice, I appreciate it!

@Susan Davis I was in a meeting and they used it. It looked the same. Let me know if you use it and what you think

@Susan Davis yes, they did. I remember we discussed in groups as well.
You're not successful because you're not consistent
Controversial, sure. But if you subscribe to our Thriving Teacherpreneur newsletter, you got the message today. Here's a snippet: "Every January, people make new goals. We’re here to say that making goals is a waste of time. That might sound strange. However, we believe the process is more powerful than the goal. As you begin a new year and have new aspirations for your teaching business, don’t commit to goals. Instead, commit to the activities that will help you achieve them. Here’s an uncomfortable truth: you’re not where you want to be because you’re not consistent. Most people can’t do one thing over and over again. As teachers, we are creators. We are creatives. We thrive on creating new things constantly. And this kills businesses. A thriving business is based on doing one thing again and again and again. Consistently. Consistency isn’t sexy. But it’s necessary." Read the full newsletter here. Let us know what you think of this. Are you consistent? Are you striving to be more consistent?

Every time I achieve something, it is because of consistency! But I often forget. Thanks for the reminder!
