College degree worth it?
What do you guys think about spending your time and money getting a college degree? I see a lot of people reaching great heights of success without a college degree. Most popular personalities are @Andrew Kirby , Iman Gadzhi, Sebastian Ghiorghiu..I've almost watched all of their videos on YOUTUBE..and I'm kind of convinced that getting a degree doesn't really matter if you're planning to become an ENTREPRENEUR. I personally feel like starting your own business doesn't require a college degree..I hear this from famous personalities like Robert Kiyosaki , Grant Cardone. I've also read the book RICH DAD POOR DAD and listened to some of their podcasts. What do you guys think, let it be straight forward...please do let me know through your comments.

@Connor Widmaier totally agree, college basically turns into "a substitute for thinking about the future" in many cases once you believe that going to school/getting good grade is inherently productive, you can stop prioritizing your time for first principles busyness ≠ productivity

Love to see more great thoughts on this! I actually wrote a very similar post here about 2 months ago as I was going through the same dilemma: https://www.skool.com/synthesizers/college-vs-an-alternative-path?p=5178b0ce If you're looking for more resources/thoughts from fellow synthesizers, I think you might enjoy checking it out :) I'm currently 2 months into my classes at the university of British Columbia - after taking a gap year to travel/grow/learn/work - and as someone who was HIGHLY skeptical of how good an investment it would be (both financially and in regards of my time), I'd say this: - school has directly taught me *far* less useful things per week than I did over the summer with my front-end software dev internship, or while traveling, learning online, etc. and there's a lot of things you're forced to learn/memorize that are both useless and bound to be forgotten - the social aspect of school is easily the best part...and good colleges basically have a monopoly right now on large networks of ambitious, like-minded and contentious people (within a similar age-group) - fear-based learning is far worse than curiosity-driven learning, but structure/accountability is still very valuable...a good reminder for me Hope this helps and I'd like to hear more abt your story so feel free to hmu as well!
First YouTube vid!
(no I don't procrastinate...) at least I didn't lose the bet though from last Sunday @John Mavrick Reyes ;) https://youtu.be/ayibrNXXBKA

Synthesizer IRL meetup! (in Vancouver, BC)
Last night was one of the most exciting meetups in a while... https://twitter.com/mielke_jack/status/1570280352824045569?s=20&t=JCtn1qyiduBuo2q7ZJWtUw After posting my thoughts on college vs. an alternative path, @John Mavrick Reyes and @Siddharth Saini both mentioned to me they're also in Vancouver, BC - so I made a gc and we all decided to meet in Vancouver to chat a while. (Why not?! 🤷🏼‍♂️ ) -> Spoiler: It couldn't have gone much better. And as requested by @Andrew Kirby, @Corey Bennett Boardman and a few others, here's a summary of our chat: We spoke for about an hour (but could've gone way longer) about: - content creation, the varying platforms, and the importance of accountability systems + online communities like synthesized skool - Entrepreneurship, side projects, learning (and the real value of a degree/school), travel, digital nomading, and more (...and even the idea of an IRL remote-work community that's curated through these online communities..ideally somewhere tropical haha) - the extreme importance of balancing heavy content intake with healthy reflection, writing, discussions w/ like-minded thinkers etc. (cause without it, it's basically addiction/overload and the head space gets very foggy.) - importance of project-based learning (learning by doing) vs. mere in-class learning (or even online courses) and the universal principle of growth: you've gotta push your limits to improve. Also, we discussed the idea that putting yourself out there allows you to make your own luck (serendipity!) - meditation, rational buddhism, Sam Harris, enlightenment, and more Initial takeaways: - IRL energy is just different—we could’ve talked all night and the potential energy in the room was unlike anything I'd seen in a while. - Many of us have “unconventional” goals/desires that are wayy better handled w accountability systems/partners (that are often harder to find IRL). We're experimenting with daily twitter posts to just get the right flow going there. - shockingly aligned on many topics (in a way that's rarely ever found purely through IRL-based connections) yet we all had new gems to share here and there which continually added to the convo - the internet curates the right people for you like no other. - also: was thinking that a casual podcast would be fun if anyone else does something similar (for other synthesizers to see). We kinda missed on this one.

@Griffin A. Hamilton ayy no way! I'll dm rn :)
College vs. an alternative path
Ay guys! I've been thinking about this choice of going to college vs. trying to "fast track" my way into the knowledge based economy as a digital nomad/creator/software developer for a while now. I'd love to share some quick thoughts for anyone interested - and if anyone's got any opinions/feedback after, I'd be thrilled to hear em! (..and sorry if it gets a lil long.) I drafted a whole piece for my newsletter about 3 weeks ago explaining why I wouldn't be going to college - but then proceeded to change my mind like 3 more times..sooo now I'm actually giving it a shot for at least 2 weeks (until the tuition is actually due .. hahah) - I'm calling it a 2 week college experiment. Before going, I'm thinking of the pros of university as this: - structure for those who need it...and a decent bridge from HS to the real world - constantly surrounded by people your age (i.e a pretty good network, social benefits, etc.) - you fit in, and with a degree you have an increased level of credibility to most companies (as well as the rest of society as a so-called “educated person”) - 4 year party...🤷🏼‍♂️ And the cons: - outdated learning model that's based on extrinsic motivators and gradually suppresses independent thinking, creativity, etc. (which you can feel free to argue down below .. especially if you've already gone) - limited freedom to take full control of your learning, seek job opportunities, travel, etc. (aka the stuff I did in my gap year). In other words, you aren't just paying for classes but also THE OPPORTUNITY COST associated with the fact that you could've gained an industry relevant internship that makes minimum wage but still puts you up at a NET POSITIVE of $35+ an hour. - pretty expensive tuition (although I'm pretty lucky to have Canadian tuition) compared to nearly any online program...or the countless free internet gems w/ YouTube, twitter, etc. So put differently, I'll use a metaphor: - College is like the highway that's supposed to get you from one state to another... Basically everyone takes it and it's known as the "reliable route" but if you're not careful, you might get hit by a big ol traffic jam and question why you didn't go..say...off-roading. Highways also often have fat fee$.

@Anessa Ryce That first part about knowing your car is very important - great point! I think a lot of the fear is literally just taking that first step that not many people take, and after that it all gets easier if you already have a reliable car, sufficient systems, and a good map of the terrain. Also...nobody wants to get stuck in the mud somewhere with their wheels spinning. Admittedly, that's my biggest fear (which might be somewhat irrational, who knows) and it's why I think it's so important to find others to ride with that can potentially pull you out if that does happen and to form a very robust foundation (in the form of skills, network, portfolio, health etc.). Very interesting points with your sister, she sounds very impressive and I'm glad she enjoyed that track! It seems like different things can work best for everyone. I'm excited to see what I think of these classes, general structure, etc. but I think you are right about what I truly want. This was some great feedback! Thx :)

@Anessa Ryce Awesome feedback! I agree and I feel like this fear is definitely a pretty rational one (as far as fears go). Hahaha we'll see how it goes - I would've very likely been the dude you were side eyeing 😉 Funny times...
