Beneath that human face is a hideous monster who feeds on human hearts. Eventually, Wang’s wife (a virtuous woman named Chen) discovers the truth. The demon kills Wang and eats his heart. Desperate, Chen seeks help from a wandering Taoist monk, who first refuses to help because Wang “brought it upon himself” by his lust and weakness. After Chen’s persistence, the monk uses his powers to subdue the demon, retrieves Wang’s stolen heart (or gives him a new one from his wife’s sacrifice, depending on the version), and resurrects him.
