A kind but naïve scholar named Wang Sheng (王生) meets a beautiful young woman wandering alone. She claims she’s lost and needs help. Wang, enchanted by her beauty, brings her home despite his wife’s protests.

The woman appears gentle and charming — but secretly, she is a demon wearing a painted human skin. Beneath that human face is a hideous monster who feeds on human hearts.

Eventually, Wang’s wife (a virtuous woman named Chen) discovers the truth. The demon kills Wang and eats his heart. Desperate, Chen seeks help from a wandering Taoist monk, who first refuses to help because Wang “brought it upon himself” by his lust and weakness.

After Chen’s persistence, the monk uses his powers to subdue the demon, retrieves Wang’s stolen heart (or gives him a new one from his wife’s sacrifice, depending on the version), and resurrects him.
