Move to Thrive: Keeping Your Body (and Mind) Moving Through the Holiday Season
We all know movement is one of the pillars of feeling strong, energised, and alive. But the holiday season has a funny way of derailing even the best of routines. Between social events, end-of-year rush, extra food, late nights, and the general “I’ll get back on track in January” thinking, it’s easy to let movement slide without even realising it. But this is actually one of the most important times to keep moving. Not for weight loss. Not to “earn” your food. Not to smash out big workouts or punish yourself. But simply because your body and nervous system need it. Movement is one of the quickest ways to: • lower stress • improve your sleep • calm your mind • lift your mood • strengthen your immune system • keep your energy steady (so you don’t feel wiped out by all the end-of-year chaos) And let's not get too caught up in thinking it needs to be perfect or structured. My motto during the holidays is "something is better than nothing!". A 10-minute walk, gentle stretching, dancing in the kitchen, a slow swim, marching on the spot, moving your body in a way that feels good - it all counts. You don’t need to 'train'. You just need to move. So as we head into the festive season, let’s think about movement as one of the best gifts we can give ourselves... a way to stay grounded, calm, and connected to our energy. What’s one simple way you can keep your body moving over the next few weeks?

For me, the simplest way is the long walk. Nothing fancy. Just stepping out, one foot after the other, letting the mind settle and the body remember it is alive. Even during the holiday rush, that small walk keeps me grounded. Something really is better than nothing, and sometimes that “something” is all we need. Headed for a walk now!
Resilience to the Max!
We made it halfway around the globe from 34 degrees in Brisbane to -2 degrees in Toronto Canada. The journey tested my resilience and pain levels but my amazing team did the impossible. Our flight from Brisbane was delayed by eight hours, then we boarded with thunder and lightning surrounding us. We sat on the tarmac for two hours. We landed at Vancouver expecting to miss our connecting flight, but we had heard our flight was boarding and one of my team ran to stop the plane. We made it by five minutes and landed in Toronto at 1:30am. With the hire car place closing at 2am Steve ran ahead and just made it in time. We arrived at our accomodation at 4:30am jubilant but we did it. Rugged up now and checking out Christmas trees everywhere in the city. I’m very grateful for my life.

his is resilience in motion. What a journey. Delays, storms, midnight races through airports, and still you made it across the world. This is the kind of strength that speaks for itself. Truly wonderful to witness, and a reminder that the human spirit can push through far more than we think. Enjoy Toronto and those Christmas trees. You earned every moment.
What’s Your Silliest Stress Reliever?... Be Honest!
Let’s have a bit of fun today. We talk a lot about the serious stuff in here… mindset, emotional regulation, nervous system resets, growth, challenges. But sometimes resilience also looks like doing the most random, ridiculous thing just to keep yourself sane. I know I’m not the only one... so, what’s your silliest stress reliever? You know… the thing that helps you reset even though it makes absolutely no sense to anyone else. Things like: • vacuuming like you're training for the Olympics • talking to your dog like they’re your counsellor • reorganising a drawer you already organised last week • dancing in the kitchen to 90s bangers • aggressively watering the plants These quirks say a lot about how we cope when things feel heavy - it's important to be able to lighten things up for a change! What’s your weird little stress reliever? No judgement here at all!

Let me be honest, Leanne. When stress hits, that is when I do my best house arrangements. I start fixing and reorganising everything. Once, I even pulled old nails from a wall just to clear my mind, and the hammer slipped and hit my teeth. You can imagine what happened when I missed the Canadian visa. It makes no sense, but keeping my hands busy always settles me.
Motivation Monday: Turning Comparison Into Inspiration
We’ve all been there. Scrolling, watching, or hearing about someone else’s highlight reel - and suddenly, your own progress feels... well, small. You've probably heard the quote, comparison is the thief of joy. But, what if you flipped the script? What if you saw someone else’s success as proof that it’s possible - not a reminder of where you “should” be? This week, try this: - Notice when comparison shows up - what does it trigger? - Use it as a clue. What are you really craving or working towards? - Turn it into inspiration. Let others' wins fuel your own fire. Have you ever been inspired (instead of discouraged) by someone else’s progress? Share what it sparked in you your story might be the encouragement someone else needs today.

For me, Leanne, comparison only unsettles you when you don’t know your own road. Once you find it, every win you see out there becomes fuel. That’s the kind of fire I hold on to.
The Science Behind Your Bounce Back
Your bouncebackability has a lot to do with how quickly your brain and nervous system shift from stress mode back into a calmer, regulated state. When that internal alarm stops blaring, you can think clearly again. You can see options instead of panic. You start making choices that support you rather than reacting from fear or overwhelm. Every time you move from stress → regulation → clarity, you strengthen the pathway that helps you bounce back next time. It’s repetition, not perfection, that builds resilience. When I lost my ability to speak, it was one of the biggest knocks I’ve had. And I won’t sugarcoat it... I didn’t bounce back overnight. But I did bounce back. Not by fighting harder. Not by pretending everything was fine. But by taking it one tiny moment at a time. I learned new technology. I found new ways to share my message. I created new opportunities to inspire others, even without a voice. My bouncebackability didn’t take me back to who I was. It helped me become who I am now. I’d love to hear from you. What’s one moment where you surprised yourself with your ability to bounce back?

Thank you, Leanne. Your words remind me how many of us walked a hard path simply because we never knew a better one existed. I’m working to ensure our pALS and cALS never have to travel that same road.
