I got a message on Microsoft Teams about 30 minutes before I left work today.
It was one of my former employees.
She's applying for a job in management and needed help.
So I jump on a call with her and one of our Department Managers (her new manager's boss and my former boss)
We have this Leadership Successive Review site that all employees need to fill out before applying to managerial positions.
It was still showing her previous application but she needed to update it because she was covering as a manager for 6 months and had a lot more experiences to add to the review.
So I helped them figure out how to get the review updated.
She was saying she was a little bit concerned about her chances because we recently had a reorganization and there are probably going to be a lot of people applying for those management positions.
So in my current role, I see a LOT of data.
We probably have a little over 2,000 employees and over 100 managers.
One of the programs that I'm responsible for is the application that managers use to provide feedback to their employees on how effective they are at managing their caseload.
I know which managers are doing a good job and I know which managers are doing a bad job.
I also know what she was doing with the tool when she was covering as a Manager.
I told her as a covering manager she was doing a better job than many of the permanent managers.
She could only see it from her perspective which is limited to what she can see at her level.
However, because I have access to the entire organization, I have a much wider perspective than she does.
I say that to say, many times we also are much further ahead than we think we are because we are looking at it from our limited perspective.
However, if we were able to see ourselves from that wider perspective we would be surprised at how far ahead we actually are!
