Question about color dominance in stranded knitting

I have a question regarding stranded colorwork terminology. While reviewing the instructions for this pattern, I want to confirm that I’m interpreting the terms correctly. My understanding is that the contrast color refers to the dominant color, while the main color refers to the background color.

I knit with one color held in each hand, so following that logic, the main/background color would be held in my right hand and the contrast/dominant color in my left.

However, I had previously understood “dominant” and “background” to be synonymous, which is causing some confusion. I’d appreciate clarification.
