Arrogance (unholy pride) VS Pride (Holy Confidence)
βMan is made in the image and likeness of God.β This is not flattery, but foundation. The Lord Jesus said, βIs it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?β (John 10:34)βnot to inflate the ego, but to remind man of the glory he forfeits when he rebels against the One who formed him. Yet confusion arises because men mix two very different things: pride born of truth, and pride born of delusion. Many call all confidence βpride,β not knowing what spirit they are speaking of. But Scripture divides them clearly. Arrogance is self-prideβa soul claiming strength apart from the Father. Jesus said plainly, βThe Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do.β (John 5:19) If the sinless Christ said He could do nothing alone, what madness is it for mortal man to pretend otherwise? Thus self-pride is the first lie of the serpent: βYe shall be as godsββnot in likeness, but by independence. A delusion. But Selfless-Prideβthe pride of the family of Christβis founded in humility, not ego. It is written, βBlessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.β (Matthew 5:5) Meekness is not weaknessβit is strength aligned with God, the lion lying down yet fully aware of its roar. It is the pride of a family of lions, not a wandering beast seeking prey. Consider when Abraham spoke boldly before the Lord about Sodom. He said, βBehold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, which am but dust and ashes.β And the Lord answered not with anger but with patience, for Abrahamβs boldness was born of faith, not fury. But when Job darkened counsel without knowledge, God rebuked him, βWhere wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth?β (Job 38:4) And again, βHast thou commanded the morning since thy days?β (Job 38:12) Here the Lord silenced arrogance, not humility. This is the difference: Pride founded on fact is confidence. Pride founded on imagination is arrogance. Even Christ Himself was accused of pride. When He declared, βI am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by meβ (John 14:6)βthe small-souled heard arrogance. But He spoke only the truth of His lineage. Again He said, βI and my Father are one.β (John 10:30) Not boasting, but testifying.
