Arrogance (unholy pride) VS Pride (Holy Confidence)
“Man is made in the image and likeness of God.”
This is not flattery, but foundation. The Lord Jesus said, “Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?” (John 10:34)—not to inflate the ego, but to remind man of the glory he forfeits when he rebels against the One who formed him.
Yet confusion arises because men mix two very different things: pride born of truth, and pride born of delusion. Many call all confidence ‘pride,’ not knowing what spirit they are speaking of. But Scripture divides them clearly.
Arrogance is self-pride—a soul claiming strength apart from the Father. Jesus said plainly, “The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do.” (John 5:19) If the sinless Christ said He could do nothing alone, what madness is it for mortal man to pretend otherwise? Thus self-pride is the first lie of the serpent: “Ye shall be as gods”—not in likeness, but by independence. A delusion.
But Selfless-Pride—the pride of the family of Christ—is founded in humility, not ego. It is written, “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.” (Matthew 5:5) Meekness is not weakness—it is strength aligned with God, the lion lying down yet fully aware of its roar. It is the pride of a family of lions, not a wandering beast seeking prey.
Consider when Abraham spoke boldly before the Lord about Sodom. He said, “Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, which am but dust and ashes.” And the Lord answered not with anger but with patience, for Abraham’s boldness was born of faith, not fury.
But when Job darkened counsel without knowledge, God rebuked him, “Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth?” (Job 38:4) And again, “Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days?” (Job 38:12) Here the Lord silenced arrogance, not humility.
This is the difference:
Pride founded on fact is confidence.
Pride founded on imagination is arrogance.
Even Christ Himself was accused of pride. When He declared, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6)—the small-souled heard arrogance. But He spoke only the truth of His lineage. Again He said, “I and my Father are one.” (John 10:30) Not boasting, but testifying.
His pride is His family: “Whosoever shall do the will of my Father… the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.” (Matthew 12:50)
His joy is His unity: “As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you.” (John 15:9)
His boast is His obedience: “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me.” (John 4:34)
Thus there is pride, the fact: a family.
And there is pride, the delusion: a loner.
The wicked flee from the truth of this because their conscience betrays them. But, “The righteous are bold as a lion.” (Proverbs 28:1) A lion does not roar because it doubts its place—it roars because its place is sure.
Therefore the Word rightly rebukes all who trust in their private imagination:
“Why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” (Luke 6:46)
Lean not on the pride of thine own mind. Jesus said, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself.” (Matthew 16:24) Deny the false self—the ego, the knowing-all, the leaning-upon-its-own-understanding self—so the true self in Christ may rise.
For only when self dies can sonship live. And only when ego falls can wisdom enter. The Lord said, “If ye continue in my word… ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:31-32)
Free from delusion.
Free from arrogance.
Free to stand in the true pride of God’s own family.
Repent. Return to the Lion of Judah. Let His roar replace your whisper, His truth replace your opinions, His strength replace your posturing. And in that holy exchange, you will find the only pride that heaven honors—the pride of belonging to Christ.
