Controling the Water
Painting on slightly damp paper I,m planning a course for the classroom area based on the topic of water control. This is what creates atmosphere in paintings. The images below show the first stages of watercolors where I worked on the slightly damp surface to create a misty background. I wait for that to dry before adding the next layer or glaze, or elements like cars and figures which appear in sharper focus.

It's useful to remember that the white of the paper is like an extra color and we can use it for highlights, as here for a glass jar or the shine on flowers, the heads of figures, metal on cars etc.
