[Daily Impact] Most People Will Never Think of Doing This…
When considering the advantage of listening more than speaking, there’s an old saying: “I don’t learn anything…while I’m talking.” In other words, we learn when we listen, not when we speak. And I happen to believe that’s wonderful advice…in general. However, I’d like to explore something that may at first seem rather counterintuitive. It seems that while we are speaking — *if/when we stay conscious of what we’re saying* — we actually CAN learn while we speak. Key Point: As we listen to/observe what we ourselves are saying, we can take in this information and utilize it as a guide to determine whether we are on the right track…or whether a “course correction” is needed. We can even replay our words later to ourselves in order to determine the same. Powerful Thought: My coauthor in The Go-Giver series, John David Mann, often quotes or paraphrases the iconic author, Joan Didion, who famously said, “I write entirely to find out what I'm thinking, what I'm looking at, what I see, and what it means. What I want and what I fear.”
