Like, something was genuinely broken in me.
Because I would have these incredible days where everything clicked. I'd feel clear, motivated, energised. Like I'd finally figured it out. And I'd build something on those days. A whole new system, a routine, a plan that made complete sense.
And then three days later? Gone. Abandoned. Like it never existed.
For years I thought that was a character flaw. A willpower problem. A "I just need to try harder" situation.
It took me a long time to realise I was wrong about all of it.
Not about my ability to be consistent. About what I was building for.
I was building for the version of me that doesn't actually need help.
Let me explain.
When you're having a great day, a really great one, you don't actually need a system. You've got energy. You've got motivation. Your brain is firing and everything feels possible. You could run the system in your head. You don't need the structure because you're already functioning.
But we build on those days. Because those are the days we have the capacity to build.
And then we expect that system to carry us through the days when we can barely think straight. When we're exhausted. When the idea of making one more decision feels like being asked to climb a mountain in flip flops.
That's not a fair test. And it's not a realistic one either.
Nobody lives at peak capacity all the time.
Not you. Not me. Not the person online who makes it look effortless. Not even elite athletes, who have full recovery days built into their training schedules, because they know that pushing at the same intensity every single day leads to injury, not progress.
But somewhere along the way, personal development sold us a different story.
The story that if you just optimise enough, discipline yourself enough, want it enough, you can perform at your best every single day. That the goal is to eliminate the low days. To power through. To be consistent no matter what.
And I believed it for a long time.
I'd wake up exhausted and look at my perfectly built system and feel like a failure because I couldn't make it work. Because it required decision-making and energy and motivation just to use it. And I had none of those things left.
That's not a system. That's a performance.
Real systems don't ask you to show up as your best self. They work when you're your worst self. They remove friction instead of adding it. They make the next step so obvious you could do it half asleep, because some days, that's exactly what you need.
The shift for me wasn't about finding a better system.
It was about accepting something I'd been resisting for a long time.
That I have peaks and I have troughs. That some days I can do more and some days I can do less. And that neither of those things is a problem to fix. They're just the reality of being human, especially with an ADHD brain that runs hot and then runs completely empty.
Once I stopped trying to build a life that forced me to perform at my best every day, and started building one that could hold me on my worst days too, everything got easier.
Not because I suddenly had more energy.
Because I stopped spending what little I had fighting against myself.
The question I ask now when I'm building anything, a routine, a workflow, a plan, is this: would this still work on a day when I can barely function? Would the version of me who is depleted, overwhelmed, and running on empty actually be able to use this?
If the answer is no, I simplify it until the answer is yes.
That's the real test.
Not does it work when you're motivated. Does it work when you're not.
