Over the past days, we’ve explored Prana through the lens of Pranayama and the Pancha Kosha - understanding that this life force permeates every layer of our being.
Now we go deeper.
Within the yogic tradition, Prana is not one uniform force. It expresses itself through five primary movements within the body - known as the Pancha Prana.
These are the currents through which life animates you.
🌀 The Five Movements of Prana
Prana (Sthoola) Vayu (inward & upward flow - chest/heart)
Governs inhalation, sensory intake, and the drawing in of life force.
Apana Vayu (downward flow - lower abdomen) Responsible for elimination, grounding, and release - physically and energetically.
Samana Vayu (inward balancing flow - navel center)
Regulates digestion, assimilation, and internal balance.
Udana Vayu (upward flow - throat/head)
Supports expression, communication, and higher states of awareness.
Vyana Vayu (expansive flow - throughout the body)
Circulates energy across all systems, integrating the whole.
🌿 Week 2 Practices Through the Lens of Pancha Prana
As we move through Identity & Self Love, our breath practices are not random - they are precise tools to refine the movement of Prana.
✨ Chit Shakti Pranayama
Awakens and harmonizes the entire field of prana.
- Balances Vyana Vayu (integration across the system)
- Supports Udana Vayu (clarity, intention, inner vision)
- Deepens connection to intuition and the higher self
🔥 Kapalbhati (Skull Shining Breath)A cleansing, activating kriya that sharpens and purifies.
- Stimulates Samana Vayu (digestive fire - agni)
- Clears stagnation in Apana Vayu (release of toxins, heaviness)
- Awakens clarity in Prana Vayu (lightness, alertness)
🌗 Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing)A balancing practice that purifies the subtle channels (nadis).
- Harmonizes Prana & Apana Vayu
- Regulates the nervous system through balance of ida & pingala
- Creates the conditions for Sushumna Nadi to awaken
- Integrates all five vayus into coherent flow
🔥 Why This Matters
To work with Prana is to work with life itself.
When Prana is scattered - we feel restless, depleted, unclear.
When Prana is blocked - we feel stuck, heavy, disconnected. When Prana is refined - we feel clear, energized, aligned, alive.
This is the purpose of Pranayama:Not just breathing techniques… but the conscious expansion, direction, and mastery of life force.
As described in the classical yogic texts, when the flow of Prana is balanced and guided inward, the mind becomes still.
And in that stillness… we begin to perceive our true nature.
🌊 Bringing It Back to the Path
Through these practices, you are not just “doing breathwork.”You are refining the currents of your being.
You are learning to:
- Release what no longer serves (Apana)
- Ignite your inner fire (Samana)
- Expand and circulate energy (Vyana)
- Elevate awareness (Udana)
- Receive life fully (Prana)
And as these currents align…You naturally move closer to Bliss.
🪞 Reflection for the Sangha
As you practice this week, begin to notice:
Which techniques shift your energy most noticeably?
Where do you feel activation, release, expansion, or clarity in your body?
