From Pointing to First Words: How to respond to pointing
When your child points, here’s the sequence:
1. Get the item they want
2. Hold it by your mouth
3. Model the word with a pause after (allow for processing time and possible imitation or gesture)
4. Then give it to them
This gives them a clear view of your mouth, pairs the word with the object, and shows them that communication works—without any pressure to say it.
