We talk a lot about teaching skills…
But O’Connor & Penney (2021) remind us that young people learn to move well because they first form an emotional bond with the activity.
Curiosity → motivation → technical development.
So here’s the real question for coaches and PE teachers:
👉 If a child has built a positive bond with physical activity, does grading their performance help… or does it risk damaging that bond?
👉 And by assessing movement with scores, levels or grades, are we unintentionally pushing some children further away from activity?

Are our assessment systems supporting engagement, or squeezing it out?
