Welcome to The Decision Room - Read This First
My name is Stephen McCarthy. Like many of you watching this — I grew up with one dream. To be a professional footballer. I did what your kids are doing right now. I went on overseas trials. I chased it hard. I know exactly what that feels like from the inside — the hope, the sacrifice, the uncertainty, and what happens when it doesn't go the way you planned. My path as a player ended through injury. But it didn't end my connection to the game — it redirected everything that came after. I went on to earn a full Division 1 scholarship in the US, represented Ireland at underage international level, completed my UEFA A Licence, and eventually got the call from Manchester United. For 8 years I was a First Team Scout there — working under José Mourinho, Louis van Gaal, and Ole Gunnar Solskjær. My job was to identify players at the highest level of professional football and tell the manager honestly what I saw. No sentiment. Just the truth. I now run Queensland Soccer Academy in Brisbane, Australia. And what I see every week are families investing everything — money, time, emotion — into a system that isn't always investing back. Here's the reality nobody says out loud. Football is a business. Academies need players to fill squads and fund their operations. Some of those players have a genuine pathway. Others are making the numbers work. The club often knows the difference long before they tell you. I'm not saying that to be harsh. I'm saying it because understanding it changes how you make decisions for your child. That's why I built The Decision Room. This community exists for players and families who want honest answers from someone who has been on every side of this game. The kid with the dream. The player whose path ended through injury. The scout deciding futures at the highest level. And the coach and academy owner watching it all play out on the ground every week. If you want to be told your child is definitely going to make it — this is the wrong place. If you want an honest, informed read on where they are, what the realistic path looks like, and how to make better decisions for their future — welcome.
