Claims misconceptions
One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is: "If my insurance company didn't pay anything, it shouldn't count as a claim." Unfortunately, that's not how it works. Once a homeowners or auto insurance claim is filed, it's generally recorded on your claims history and can remain there for 3 to 5 years, depending on the carrier and the type of claim. Future insurance companies may see that history when they're evaluating your application. That doesn't mean every claim will increase your premium or make you ineligible for coverage. Every carrier has its own underwriting guidelines. But it does mean that filing a claim is a decision worth thinking through. This is why I always encourage my clients to call me before filing a claim whenever possible. Sometimes it absolutely makes sense to file. Other times, the damage may be close to your deductible, or the situation may not be covered at all. Having that conversation first can help you make an informed decision before a claim is officially reported. My job isn't just to help when something goes wrong. It's to help you navigate these decisions before they become costly. That's the difference between having an insurance policy and having an insurance broker.
