Hey Folks, Coach Tara here. Let's talk Fiber for a minute.
Did you know that, in addition to helping regular bowl movements, fiber is a must for:
- balancing blood sugar - it slows the blood sugar spike
- diversifying gut microbiome for improved immune response
- cruciferous veggies give us DIM, which helps digest excess estrogen to regulate hormones
- and check out this NIH study on how fiber is correlated with reduced cancer risk
The average US American gets around 15-17 grams of fiber, well below the recommended amount for women of 25-30g of fiber per day and men around 35g/day.
But don't just bombard your body if you're nowhere near the recommended amount. That can create gas and bloating. Start by slowly increasing until well-tolerated.
Ways to Increase Fiber Intake from 5g/meal to ultimately 10g/meal
- make sure veggies take up the most real estate on your plate
- get those greens
- eat the natural rainbow (not red dye #5)
- add a tsp of ground flax or psyllium husk in a smoothie (if tolerated)
- For recovering guts whose systems don’t handle raw veggies -- make sure the fiber passes the fork mush test (must smash with fork) so you can digest it.
What's your daily fiber count? Got any favorite fibers?
