Meditation Theme: Preparing the Way
Tonight we are going to meditate on Psalm 29 and the moment in Luke 3 when Jesus is baptized by John.
John was in the wilderness preparing the way for the Lord. His whole message was simple but powerful: prepare your hearts.
And that’s really what the wilderness is about.
The wilderness is the place where God strips away the noise. It’s where our insecurities come up. It’s where the questions come up. It’s where the fears, the pride, the wounds, the longing, all of it begins to surface.
But the wilderness is not punishment.
The wilderness is preparation.
Just like John stood in the wilderness preparing the way for Jesus, there are seasons in our lives where we are in the wilderness preparing the way for the Lord to move deeper in us.
Preparing our hearts.
Preparing our souls.
Preparing our lives.
Tonight we’re going to sit with that idea.
Because many of you have been sharing things that are coming up since Bible study. Insecurities, emotions, memories, realizations. Things you maybe didn’t even know were there.
And that can feel uncomfortable.
But that is often the voice of the Lord stirring the soil of your heart.
Psalm 29 talks about the voice of the Lord moving over the waters, powerful and full of majesty. The voice of the Lord breaks things open. The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness.
Sometimes the Lord’s voice does that in us too.
It breaks things open.
It shakes things loose.
It reveals things that were buried.
And that is part of preparing the way.
Tonight we’re going to imagine ourselves in that wilderness place.
Like John, standing in the wilderness and preparing the way for the Lord.
Not forcing change.
Not striving.
Simply opening our hearts and saying yes to what God is revealing.
Because Jesus’ journey did not stop at the wilderness.
The wilderness led to His ministry.
His ministry led to the cross.
And at the cross He said, “It is finished.”
The work has already been completed.
But the inner journey of our hearts catching up to that truth is the process of sanctification.
That’s the journey we’re walking together.
So tonight during meditation, we’re going to:
• Notice what the Lord is bringing up
• Lay those things before Him
• Prepare the way in our hearts
• And sit in anticipation of what God is doing in us
Just like the people in the wilderness were waiting for the Lord to come.
Because sometimes the wilderness isn’t empty.
Sometimes the wilderness is the place where the Lord is about to arrive.
