If you’re wearing sunblock creams (sunscreens) all day every day, here’s something that might pique your interest. The sun activates biochemical processes in our body that are fundamental to our health. ☀️
Phototherapy is the process where the sun touches our skin, and this helps our body create hormones including testosterone and ‘vitamin’ D. The sun helps strengthen our immune system, reduce inflammation, and regulate our circadian rhythm which impacts our ability to sleep at night. The sun also helps us ‘feel happier,’ affecting our emotional state.
Jesus and I practice controlled sun exposure, where we limit how much sun we receive, but ensure we get some when possible. We both have different levels of melanin in our skin, which affects how much sun our body wants to receive, which usually means that after 10~15 minutes, I’ve had enough and head for the shade. The key is to listen to our body. When we don’t, that’s when our systems get dysregulated and chronic illness creeps in. Listen, listen, listen.
