Self expression?

It is a piece from a discussion of a Yogi with a "Parfum Saint". And my questions are why do we need to self express ourselves? When is it an expression of a lifeforce and when of ego which needs attenion? Do you feel it? Do we need to go through that need of attenion to become our true selves? Is selfexpresion another desire, attachment? Can you say when you make sth for your development and when you make it to be seen by others?
