Talking money with drivers.....
Of course, one of the top bits of info that a driver wants to know right off the bat is MONEY. Some drivers want a CPM (cent per mile) quote or death!!! But, here's the thing, sometimes the CPM doesn't tell the story of income very clearly at all, and here's why:
Say I was paying $1.00 per mile to my drivers!! That sounds pretty amazing, right? Especially since the average pay is between $.55-.75 cpm, depending on what state you are in and what you're hauling. Well, if you take that as "I'm going to be rich!!," you'd be missing a lot of info! If I only was able to give you 500 miles a week all of a sudden that doesn't look so rich! Or if it was a 1099 position, and you'd be responsible for all your fuel, insurance etc. Or, if you were making 25 stops a week to manually unload the TOUCH FREIGHT and you could only drive limited miles weekly.
The point is there are MANY sides to the "how much does it pay" question and they all matter! CPM is by far not the most important question to ask when trying to get a good idea how much money a position will pay and how much a driver can expect to have in their pocket every week.
Try to educate your drivers (lots will already know!) and yourselves on all the parts that go into "how much," and you'll know how to sell any position!
