I've been watching some gameplay from a licensed game collection coming later this year that I'm super excited about…
Marvel Vs Capcom Fighting Collection
Last week at the Evolution Championship Series (EVO for short), the top fighting game pros in the industry were testing out this game collection and giving their expert feedback.
There's a huge community of new and old school fighting game fans that are so excited for this collection to come out…
I've watched every video I can about this collection from my favorite YouTubers...
And some new YouTubers that put out unique videos on the topic.
Capcom stands to make millions in sales by giving fans a modern home console version of the arcade classics from the Versus series of fighting games.
Many peeps never thought it would happen.
In 2013, Capcom lost the licensing rights for “Marvel 2” and announced its removal from digital marketplaces...
If you didn't own an older gaming system like Playstation 2, you were SOL...
Secondary market prices soared with some sealed in box copies fetching $2,000+...
Several YouTubers started petitioning Capcom and Marvel to give us a modern console version and the movement gained traction...
Most people cared about Marvel Vs Capcom 2...
But then Capcom went above and beyond and released a collection of 7 Versus games that caught fans totally off guard in a good way...
This is a collection of games that are almost 3 decades old…
Would enough people care, to make it worth releasing?
Well, after its announcement, it topped the sales charts for Amazon and made it onto Wishlist's for Steam accounts across the world.
Now, you might not care two licks about fighting games.
But the power of licensing IP can't be overstated here.
Capcom followed 3 simple steps to get fans drooling over old games…
1) Refresh an Old IP:
They bundled 7 favorite classic titles that helped shape the MARVEL vs. CAPCOM universe with gameplay enhancements like bug fixes, a training mode, artwork, and soundtracks…
2) Improved The Process:
They gave this bundle both single player and online play that allows playing with friends worldwide through online compatibility (From local arcades in the 1990's to worldwide online play today)
3) Put their product into someone elses flow of traffic:
They gave fighting game pros early access to test and play the game at EVO. Many of these pros have huge YouTube followings and with continual coverage, more people than ever are excited for this release. As a bonus, these pro gamers are handling all the objections for Capcom as they make new content covering concerns their audience has.
These 3 steps can work with ANY IP…
While you might not have access to make big bucks off of a Marvel license...
There are great assets out there that are waiting to be licensed and put in front of the right audience.
We've got plenty of examples and training in the group.
I'm super appreciative that introduced us all to the wonderful world of licensing... I'm still learning this licensing game but I can now see the power of licensing even in the things I used to take for granted as a consumer.
Anyhow, I was inspired to share this after seeing several licensing stories from Travis in recent days.
If you've got your own story, I hope you'll share it here as well!
