Fitness Tip (revelations)
I’m getting back into shape (gets harder when you’re older), and I’ve discovered some trends that may help others get back into shape or keep in shape:
  1. Time of day. Everyone seems to have a peak time. If you attempt do workout at off peak times, you will struggle. Personally, I’m a morning person. Working out at the start of my day is far easier than working out mid-day or after work.
  2. Cost. Running in your neighborhood is free. Personal trainers are expensive. I’ve worked out at all ranges of costs. You have to find an option that fits your budget, but also clicks with your motivation.
  3. Peer motivation. A workout buddy, or a class can get you through a tough time.
Finding the magic combination of these three factors seems to be key.
When I was young, I worked out at the university gym (free), my room mate worked out with me and we did body building style workouts. We did morning workouts (at 20 years old, this was the challenging part, but it was the only time we had).
When I graduated, we joined a big chain gym. Still primarily motivated by each other. Cost was minimal, and mornings were still tough but the best option.
When that workout buddy switched gyms, things totally fell apart. Lifting can easily be a solitary pursuit, but not for me. My wife and I joined a local gym, but she prefers evening workouts- it was tough.
Getting back into it, I coined a gym with a personal trainer. As I age, morning workouts are easier and easier to accomplish. Having the one on one or one to two sessions was very motivating- this was the most expensive option and eventually just was tough to continue to pay.
Recently I found a gym with group workouts. Classes are small (2-12 depending on the day). We all know each other by name and it’s a very encouraging environment. Costs are at a reasonable level.
If anyone is still reading, my advice is this; if you’re struggling to get into shape, be sure to explore the factors that are holding you back. Perhaps you just haven’t found the correct combination.
