Why have Grade 4 Math results recovered so poorly since Covid ?
Hi Parents ! 📊 Did you know? Recent U.S. Math results from NAEP (the nation’s biennial assessment) still haven’t returned to pre-COVID levels. 📉 Many students continue to experience the effects of pandemic-related learning loss — especially in math, where each concept builds on the last. ⚠️ This isn’t just a short-term dip — it’s a multi-year national challenge. For nearly five years now, students across the country have been unable to regain lost ground. 📍 The biggest gaps are in West Virginia, Delaware, New Mexico, Nevada, and Alaska. 📈 The strongest recovery is in Alabama, Mississippi (them again!), and Tennessee. ➕ As many of us have discussed before, gaps in math can be particularly difficult to close once they form. If multiplication didn't become clear in 2021, algebra is going to be very hard in 2027.... 💬 I’d love to hear from our community: - Are you seeing students back at pre-COVID levels? - Or do you notice lingering gaps in understanding and confidence? Let’s share experiences and ideas to support our students moving forward. 💡
