Ask a 4th grader what the equals sign (=) means, and they’ll usually say:
“It means the answer is coming next.” 💬
This is one of the biggest reasons kids struggle when they hit Algebra. They don’t see the "=" as a balance; they see it as a "Calculate Now" button. 🔘
As an example, ask a student:
8 + 4 = _ + 5
A huge percentage of students will put 12 in that blank.
Why? Because their brain sees 8 + 4, sees the "=", and immediately wants to produce the "result." 🧠⚡️
Why this matters:
This is EXACTLY the kind of missing basic we talk about all the time. The concept of balancing equations in Algebra will be lost on a student who doesn't understand mathematical equality. ⚖️
They will struggle with missing number problems and word problems that require setting up an equation. Middle school math will get hard, fast. 📉
The Fix: 🛠️
We stop using "=" only at the end of a line. We show them 12 = 8 + 4 and 7 + 5 = 6 + 6. We turn the "Calculate button" back into a "Balance scale." ⚖️
Try this with your child today: Ask them, "What does the equals sign actually mean?"
