Why have Grade 8 Math results not recovered since Covid... AT ALL ???
Grade 8 students in 2024 were in Grade 4 when Covid hit — right in the middle of building foundational number sense. I feel so sorry for these kids - the upheaval could not have come at a worse time :(
For parents of middle schoolers, this is the cohort most affected by Covid.
Not a single state in America improved its Grade 8 math score between 2019 and 2024.
The national average fell by 8 points — the largest recorded drop in NAEP history.
Tennessee came closest to holding steady, but even there scores didn't rise. I've attached a graphic on the best and worst recoveries by state
💬 Now I want to hear from you
👇What have you seen in your state with Grade 8 math since Covid? Have teachers and schools caught up — or are you still seeing the gap with your own kids?
🔧What do you think we can do to turn things around for these kids as they enter high school? More tutoring? Curriculum reform? Something else entirely?
🗺️Drop your state below — I'm curious whether what parents are seeing on the ground matches what NAEP is showing us.
