3 Parts to the Human Mind
has taught there are three parts to the human mind...
Conscious Mind - the voices we are constantly hearing chatter in our mind that is reasoning between emotion and logic when striving to make daily decisions. The conscious mind always speaks in questions and can only get information through our 5 senses of Sight, Sound, Taste, Smell, and Touch. The best part of the conscious mind is that it allows us to reason and make decisions for ourselves.
Subconscious Mind – any feeling any situation you are in there is a feeling you have about it. Your feelings impact your conscious mind. Annie Grace teaches that your mind has already determined what it feel about a thought 6 or 7 seconds before that thought even registers in the conscious mind. The subconscious mind speaks in repetitive stories that Napoleon Hill describes as a hypnotic rhythm. This can have either a positive or negative impact depending on the emotions that come from the stories being told. But these stories have a massive amplifying impact on our conscious mind so Russell represents the subconscious mind as an elephant. Also, think of the subconscious mind as a tractor driving over the same path of farmland over and over until it makes a trail that all other vehicles fall into and follow in. This is how we develop muscle memory and automatic impulses and reactions is because our subconscious mind is responding to stimulus 7 seconds before our conscious mind is. Russell says to get good at athletics, business or anything else to train the subconscious mind. Earl Nightingale states that the subconscious mind is a lot like a plot of fertile farm soil. Is doesn’t matter what you plant, but what you plant is what will grow. Hence the biblical verse what we sow is what we reap. When breaking a bad habit or wanting to develop a good new habit it is the subconscious mind that we want to train to achieve true transformation.
Instinctive Mind – this is fear. Fear doesn’t tell you what happened, it tells you how to fell about what happened. The goal of the instinctive mind is to protect you from physical harm by negatively warning you of bodily harm. But these impulses can expand from not just protecting your physical body to also protecting your ego. Your instinctive mind does not want you to go through the pains of feeling you are not enough, or you can not be loved. Fear speaks in absolutes. Unlike the monkeys who speak in questions, and the elephant who speaks in stories, fear the lizard speaks in ABSOLUTES.
Russell says we need to clam the lizard, guide the elephant, to get the monkeys to go where they want to go.
This was so powerful to me because my parents have always taught me since childhood that I have agency for my own actions and can determine what I want to make of my life, but with past challenges and adversities that both I’ve seen friends and family go through as well as myself I have wondered whether or not that is always true. Learning how the mind work from Russell verified that what my parents taught me growing up in absolutely true and now I have gone from wanting to believe that I can determine the outcome of my life to knowing that I am capable of determining my outcome and desired transformations 😊
