Only the designer knows the intimate details of their plans. The thinking before the sketch. The sketches before the draft. The revisions, the implementation, the mistakes, the corrections. All we, as the onlookers, see is a beautiful, complete thing. Our responsibility to that thing is to understand and appreciate the benefit of it and the other 10,000 things that support it. We may feel distanced, at times, from our integration in the design but we are still a part of it. Without control we are a part of it. Without pursuit of being in it, we still are. Reflection reveals what is not immediately apparent. How are reflecting?

As we navigate this path of understanding we'll find that the 10,000 things aren't only connected but are stacked for functionality. They don't just hold hands but pass energy between them. This energy transfer is what makes it all work. The river picks up sediment, debris, seeds, nutrients, and carries them from a source to begin a new transfer down stream, where they will benefit that system. The return comes from the wind, rain, animals, birds, ect. How can you participate in this energy transfer?

Understanding that we are a part of this earth cultivates the knowledge that it is our duty to care for it. For us to care for it properly means that we must care for ourselves properly. This involves starting the day with gratitude for our breath because it is someone else's. It becomes the life force for other living things. All 10,000 living things depending on our breath as we depend on theirs. Take a minute today to reflect on the impact of something so small and automatic as our inhalation and exhalation of air. How many other living things are we supporting by just breathing out?
