What should a producer/songwriter do when collabing with other artists?
As someone who's been producing hiphop/edm genre music for some time, I've never worked with another artist, specifically a singer. Recently got an artist who really appreciates my style and wants to collab on a song together, which is a great chance for both of us.
Since I have no experience with this at all, so I'm genuinely wondering what should a producer/songwriter do when collaborating with another artists?
Don't laugh at me but I really got some stupid questions below:
  • Should I write the vocal melodies or she should write it? She mentioned she will write the lyrics but what about the melodies? I sometimes write vocal melodies but only for myself. If write the melody, how should I prepare it for her? Should I do a humming take or should I just play a key with melody?
  • Usually I record at home, but what if we want to go to another mixing engineers recording booth, what should I prepare?
  • Should I prepare the beats in a full?
  • Are there any good platforms that give decent 1on1 coaching session that teaches stuff like these?
In general, as a bedroom producer, I really hope there's somewhere or someone could teach me the professional ways of collaboration when working with an artist or group.
