Making a Clean Vocal Feel More Human
I’m working on a vocal in Reaper that sounds good, but maybe a little too clean/polished.
I’m trying to bring out more rawness, grit, and human feel without making it distorted or messy.
Right now I’m testing a chain with Melodyne kept loose, Scheps Omni Channel 2 for shaping, Abbey Road Saturator very lightly for bite, Sibilance for sharp S sounds, and Vocal Rider to keep it sitting upfront.
Abbey Road Saturator with a low mix on a vocal bite-style preset made the biggest difference so far.
Curious what you all would try for a vocal that needs to feel more real, close, and emotional instead of overly polished?
